Traveller Atlas
At any given time, I have at least six - sometimes as many as twenty - tabletop rpg campaigns waiting in the wings. Some of them are rough sketches and no more, others are sequels to campaigns I've run before, and some even have detailed research and development work already done.
One of these is a far-future scifi sandbox-style game. Space opera, I'm thinking, although I'm looking to Vinge and Banks for my general shape here, rather than Star Wars. I'm intending to use the Mongoose Traveller ruleset for it - I bought a PDF recently, and am going to be hunting down my local dealer for a hard copy soon.
So I was pleased - in terms of inspiration, and perhaps a little intimidation - to find that there's a complete Traveller Map online, for the 'default setting', such as it is. It's magnificently detailed; from a galactic level view right down to system level. I don't even want to THINK about how many stars are in there; the answer is very definitely bigger than I can hold in my head.
I don't think I'll ever manage one that detailed, but it's certainly a direction to aim in.
