EVE: Myrmidon Go Boom

I finally lost a ship in EVE - the first since I re-upped two months ago - and it had to be the Myrmidon, the pride of my fleet.

I was flying a Level II mission, Recon (1 of 3), and starting to think about when I could get Level IIIs. A few minutes into this one, my drones were starting to get depleted, and since I, like most Gallente, fight drone-heavy, this wasn't good. I suspect I had the wrong size out to take on the mix of cruisers and destroyers in that mission. Anyway, the last three drones got popped in a rush, and the rats were starting to concentrate on me. I warped out to fetch more drones from my station stash - the mission site was actually in Oursulaert, which is my current mission base anyway.

I loaded up drones, did some quick repairs (I'd just barely dipped into armour), and warped back. Warping back in dropped me right in the middle of the bad guys, and in retrospect, I should really have warped back out and in again. But I launched the drones and started firing. There was an alarming amount of red appearing, and I started to warp out to reconsider - and then, while I was still turning to warp, there was a sudden explosion, and a pod left sitting in the wreckage of the Myrmidon.

So I'm back in the Vexor. A new loadout, slightly different to the old one:

High Slots: 4x Dual 150MM 'Scout' I Accelerator Cannon(one free still, not sure what to put there)
Mid Slots: Medium Shield Booster I, Medium Hull Repairer I (one free still)
Low Slots: 3x Power Diagnostic System I, 1x Photonic CPU Enhancer I

... and an assortment of Warriors, Acolytes, Hobgoblins and Vespas in the drone bay.

I should be able to buy or build a Myrmidon again fairly soon, but I'm going to be very, very cautious. I might even buy or build two, so that I don't have to go back to the cruiser again next time, assuming I can get enough money together.

Hum. I'm doing Level III missions with a Myrmidon, and I've only got to structure just once (the first time) - the trick is to get all unfriendlies to get a lock on your ship before launching the drones. After they lock on you launch the drones and tank the hits while the drones do all the work.

5 Ogre Is can really chew through cruisers in no time.

Then again, I prefer long-range railguns to up-close-and-personal blasters - I've put in weapon range extenders and a drone range augmentation rig - drone range goes to 55kms...

I run level IVs with a Myrmidon and can pretty much tank anything without effort.
I'm running a passive shield tank all SPR IIs in lows a mix of LSE II Shield recharger II in mid. Autocannons in highs as grid and cpu allow. Give it a try.
Check my standings 8+ with 7 corps if you doubt the shield tanked Myrmidon.
